A Conversation with Jason Hudson

Posted in Random with tags , , on November 27, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

If you’ve seen this site at all over the past three years, chances are that you’ve seen some photos by Jason Hudson. Jason’s one of our best friends and he has some serious skills behind the lens of a camera, so he started coming out and shooting photos around the time we were working on No Name Losers. He’s stuck around ever since and he’s taken a ton of great photos of all the boys around the region. He’s had photos run in Alliance, Unleashed, and he has a sweet blog of his own that he’s constantly updating with new stuff (not to mention the fact that he’s hands down the best Facebook profile picture photographer I know).

Jason has an art show coming up this week at Bottega Art and Wine here in Wilmington, so I sat down and spoke to him a little bit about his photography and what we can expect at the show itself. He’ll be exhibiting work with local photographers Keith Ketchum and Ross Rogers with background jams provided by The Goldie Hahn Solos. I helped him take his artwork to the gallery a few days ago, and I’m here to tell you that it all looks incredible.

The show is this Friday, December 2nd. If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Wilmington and you don’t go check it out, you are seriously blowing it. Jason is a really talented photographer and one of the best dudes I know, so be sure to head downtown Friday night, check out some unreal photography, drink some booze, and give him a high five. I guarantee that you won’t regret it. Hell, bring some cash and scoop up a piece or two. You know that your living room could use an artistic upgrade, am I right?

Check out www.kellerphoto.net and www.bottegagallery.com for more information. And thanks for everything over the past few years, Jason. We’re stoked for you, buddy.

For the past two years, Clay and I have been talking about starting a Misfits cover band. We’d practice all year and then only play one show on Halloween night. We always talk about how we’d get super drunk and all our friends would come out to see us and it would be the time of our lives. Then every year, we never actually do it and this night rolls around and we’re left with only our dreams of how epic it could actually be.

So we’re doing it next year. You hear that, everybody? It’s on the internet now, so we kinda have to follow through with it. Stay on us about it and we’ll see you guys in 364 days.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Posted in Random with tags on May 6, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Just got finished putting together a little prize package for Wilt C, who is the big winner of the contest we put up last week. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally on the way. Sorry for the hold-up, Wilt. He was the first person to correctly identify the title of the last post as a line from the song “Springtime” by the band Leatherface (he got bonus points for also noting that Hot Water Music covered the song). It’s a great jam, and appropriate, considering the fact that Springtime is in full effect. It should be noted that Erin, our resident PR and marketing genius, also got the correct answer mere minutes after Wilt sent his email in (Sorry E, don’t be a hater). Anyway, Wilt’s email never included his last name, so I’m going to go ahead and assume that it was Wilt Chamberlin and that he’s a big fan of our stuff, which is really exciting…

- – -

Also a little delayed, I wanted to be sure to send a big ol’ congratulations to White Lake OG Tyler Bumgarner, who got married in Virginia Beach last Saturday. The wedding was a blast; I drank a bunch of whiskey, took the microphone from the band and made a big impromptu speech that most likely made no sense whatsoever. Also, here’s a little factoid: Tyler got arrested once for dry humping a woman in a pig costume at White Lake. True story. Anyway, he and his brother took me wakeboarding for the first time and I’m sure he still kills it behind the boat whenever he gets a chance to ride. I know he checks the site from time to time, so congrats Tyler. See you this summer…

Speaking of of White Lake, big moves are being made there next weekend. Bladen County residents: hold on to your butts.

A Little Bit of Springtime in the Back of My Mind

Posted in Random with tags , , on April 26, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

It’s been a long winter, but Spring is officially here in NC, so Nick and Mark have been out getting things done with our resident photographer, Jason Hudson.  Here are a few shots that Jason got the other day, which I blatantly stole from his bookmark-worthy website. Check it out to see a bunch more of his work. Highly recommended browsing.

Nick was so excited to ride that he forgot to take off his sweatshirt!

Thanks for the shots, Jason. It’s just about time to dust off the video camera too…

Also, just for Sh*ts and Giggles, the first person who can correctly tell me what the title of this post is referencing will win a copy of the No Name Losers DVD and a few of these bad-ass new TA stickers we just had made. Start Googling and send your answers to telepromptedanthems@gmail.com.

“Grizzly Adams DID have a beard…”

Posted in Random with tags , , on March 15, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Sitting in the hospital over the last week has provided me with a lot of spare time, which has allowed me to catch up on my movie watching, internet browsing and music listening. However, one thing that I haven’t done over the last week (and then some) is shave. So I got to thinking that maybe I should just let it go and see if I could pull off one of my lifetime goals, a legit beard.

Now, once upon a time, I used to think that I was completely incapable of growing a beard. I was certain that one side would be spotty or that it would look funny or that it would just take me forever to see results and I’d abandon the mission out of frustration. And my friends definitely didn’t with help my beard insecurities. Nick and Blake, my best friends from high school, can grow full beards in about 45 minutes and they look super legit. Clay Martin can sneeze a beard whenever he wants and I’m pretty sure that Tim Boyer was born with facial hair. It always seemed like such an uphill battle, but after the last few days, I’m starting to think I could do it.

So now I’m asking for your advice, dear reader. Would I look like a total bad ass or would it just be weird looking? Vote in this poll and let me know what I should do with my face. (And just for the record, this whole idea came about solely because I just realized you could create polls in WordPress and I wanted to try it out. Plus, I currently have some painkillers in me and they’re making this whole idea really amusing at this particular moment. So humor me.)

Big Ups To Brooklyn

Thanks to the Facebook page of my good buddy DJSK, I just realized that 14 years ago today, The Notorious BIG, hands down the greatest rapper in the history of the universe, died at the age of 27. And since I’ve got a ton of free time on my hands, I’m going to be watching old Biggie videos all day. Hell, I might even sign up for Netflix just so I can watch Notorious again (believe it or not, it’s not one of the movies they have on the pediatric floor at Duke).

I also just realized that even though I have several good friends who live in New York City, I still don’t have a Biggie Smalls t-shirt. What’s up with that, ladies?

Anyway, here’s a little TA video memorial to remember the man himself so check it out. These are all modern day classics, and let’s be honest: it’s not like you were really working anyway.

Temporarily Out of Commission

Posted in Random with tags , , on March 8, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, I know that things have been a bit slow around here lately. It’s partly due to the fact that it’s not quite warm enough to jump headfirst into wakeboard season, but it’s mostly because I haven’t exactly been running on all six cylinders lately. As we speak, I’m currently holed up at the Duke University Medical Center with an IV in my arm and a severe case of bedhead. I’ll probably be here for the next few days or so, taking care of some swollen lymph nodes and avoiding the hospital food like the damn bubonic plague (on a related note, I feel like Sweetarts Jelly Beans are like God’s personal gift to me – thanks Hawley!). I’ve already had a few guests drop in and hang out for a while, and rumor has it there might even be a HotSauce sighting sometime this week, so it’s basically a big party in room 5131.

(Photo credit goes to my Mom and her brand new cell phone. She’s becoming quite the gadget nerd these days.)

- – -

In actual wakeboarding news, I just had a few very positive phone calls from my hospital bed regarding a new project that I can’t quite talk about yet. Top secret stuff, but I’ll give you this hint: it’s gonna be cool.

- – -

And finally, Nick is gearing up to head down to the Sunshine State for his annual Spring Break pilgrimage. Rumor has it that he’s going to be hanging out with Adam Fields a bit, so hopefully those guys can get some work done. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the new AF Wake School website, quit slacking and click that link right up there. Top notch wakeboard coaching from Lake Gaston to Lake Brantley; what more could you ask for?

Tuesday Morning Jams – Young Brother

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 22, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Like a jackass, I’ve been sitting on this for a few weeks now and just now realized that I hadn’t posted anything about it. So here you go: some new jams for your Tuesday morning.

Young Brother is an indie rock band from Orlando. They just dropped their debut EP last month, and I’m here to tell you that it’s pretty awesome. You wakeboarders out there might recognize some of the guys in the band: pro rider Jeff McKee is the drummer, while Alliance’s Josh McWilliams and Chris Heavener (Chase Heavener’s brother) play guitar and bass. There’s also another guitarist named Alberto, and although I don’t think he has any wakeboarding connections, I’m sure he’s a swell guy.

If you’ve seen the new Obscura movie, Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens, you’ll recognize Young Brother from the movie’s opening sequence. If I had to compare the music to anything, I’d say it sounds kind of like Tame Impala or Annuals or maybe even the last Deerhunter record. It’s mostly very layered and soothing but there are some really big, epic moments as well. Solid jams all around; I’d say it’s good choice if you’re sitting on a porch/dock/boat drinking beer or if you have to drive somewhere with your mom in the car and don’t want her to hear your heavy metal or gangster rap.

The band pulled a Radiohead and put the entire 6-song EP on their Bandcamp page where you can pay what you want to download it. I’m particularly glad that it’s so good because the last time a bunch of wakeboarders got together to make music, the result was BoardBeats, and that was the biggest GD musical disaster I’ve ever seen. I mean seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

Anyway, go check it out. I give it the official TA Seal of Approval, which is almost as good as a Best New Music tag on Pitchfork or a spot on the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack.

Currently Playing on the Laptop

  1. Young Brother – EP (duh)
  2. Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
  3. The Melvins – Lysol

Dre Day (and Everybody’s Celebratin’)

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 18, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Like pretty much every post this time of year, this has absolutely nothing to do with wakeboarding, but it needs to be said. As most anybody with half a brain knows, when it comes to hip hop, the East Coast is superior in virtually every way (sorry, Stephanie). However, despite my allegiance to the right coast, I’m also quick to acknowledge our western counterpart and what they’ve brought to the table over the years. With that in mind, I’d like to wish a very happy birthday to a producer who can rap and control the maestro: Dr. Dre.

This guy has got it all figured out: he’s turning 46 years old and his day probably consists of nothing but making baller ass headphones and slingin’ Dr. Pepper, taking it easy while everyone else in the world is on the edge of their seats wondering if this is the year that Detox will actually come out. I also just realized that The Chronic came out nearly 20 years ago. Jesus, I feel old.

Anyway, happy birthday, Doc.

In other news, it’s 70 degrees in Wilmington today and Nick and Mark have been riding once a week for the past several weeks. It’s about that time people…

Anybody Want to Wakeboard?

Posted in Random on January 10, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

When you think about it, there are so many things that are awesome about the South: friendly people, barbecue, parties at hunting camps, Bojangles…the list could go on forever. Personally, this time of year, I’m always really grateful to live in the South because of the mild winters. I couldn’t stand to live up north because then you’d have to deal with snow and ice and lousy road conditions and heavy coats and…wait a second…oh yeah, that’s right! It’s colder than a witches titty outside and there’s five inches of snow on the ground! What the f__k is going on right now? This is the beach for God’s sake, we’re not supposed to have to deal with this! Jason just tried to order a pizza and apparently Domino’s isn’t even open. That’s when you know things are bad; shit has to really hit the fan for Domino’s to close shop.

That photo is the view from my pier back home at White Lake. I’m sure there’s some clever pun in there about White Lake and snow, but I’m not even going there. My Aunt Tee reported today that the lake was frozen and the roads were nearly impassable unless you have four wheel drive (luckily 95% of the White Lake population has four wheel drive). I guess it’s pretty and all, but I seriously can’t wait for Spring to get here.

In other news, I just got back from a TA Board Meeting at Nick’s house and big things are coming. Huge things. Things that will blow your mind. Just wait…

The Best of 2010: Wakeboarding

Posted in Random on January 3, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, so better late than never, right? Cut me some slack, I was really busy (i.e., drunk) over the holidays. At any rate, I’ve managed to pull together some of the highlights of 2010 from the wide world of wakeboarding, and I’ve arranged them all in one of my world famous lists.

2010 was a pretty good year and not to be too cheesy, but we definitely want to thank everyone who took the time to watch one of the videos or read one of the posts. And be sure to keep checking in over the next few months; we’ve got some pretty cool stuff up our sleeves for 2011 and I’m pretty excited about it all.

Anyway, check out the full 2010 roundup after the jump.

2010: The Mixtape

Posted in Random on December 8, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Not a lot to say about this one. I’ve taken 18 of the best jams from the last year and thrown them all into one .zip file, slapped some custom artwork on there and threw ‘em up on the internets for all to hear.

Due to my rampant OCD (thanks, Mom), I spent a long time working on several different tracklists before I settled on this one. It’ll barely fit on one disc and gives a pretty good sampling of the Best Music of 2010 (according to me). I’m already having second thoughts about a few of the selections on both the list and the mix, but I had to draw the line at some point and just be done with it. I will admit that there are a few songs on the mixtape that weren’t on any of the records from the list, but that’s just because it’s way easier to make a good song than to make a good album. Especially if you’re a rapper.

Chances are good that you might not like everything on here, but I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll like at least a few songs. Click here to get the jams. The full tracklist is after the jump…

The Best Music of 2010

Posted in Random on December 1, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

One of the coolest things about having a blog is the illusion that people give a shit about your opinions. Since there’s not much wakeboarding going on right now and because I love making lists more than pretty much anything else on Earth, I’ve taken the liberty of gathering what I feel has been the Best Stuff of 2010 and I’ll be posting them here throughout the rest of the year.

Up first is the Best Music of 2010. Fair warning: this is undoubtedly the longest post in the history of Teleprompted Anthems. There are some pictures, but it’s mostly words. Check it out and maybe you’ll find a few new bands that you’re into. Of course, you might find a bunch of bands that you can’t stand, but I can’t be held responsible for your lousy taste in music. Check out the full list after the jump…

In Good Company

Posted in Random on December 1, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

One of the coolest things about being back in Wilmington is being able to see all the rad stuff that people are doing down here. It’s pretty cool to have talented people around to keep you motivated and eager to put out new stuff. For example, Connor Buss is one of the new kids on the block, and he came by the house yesterday to show me a new video he had been working on. He had spent some time with the whole crew and managed to get quite a bit of footy that he turned into a short video called “Teleprompted Autumn” (See what he did there?). All the boys make an appearance: Nick, Mark, Clay, Sam, Matt Deal and Connor all have clips. It turned out really well, so you should all definitely go check it out and click the little heart button. And be sure to keep an eye on his Vimeo page because I’ve heard rumors of another new movie he’s been working on that he plans to drop soon. Thanks Connor; good stuff, man.

- – -

If still photography is more your thing, we’ve got you covered there as well. TA resident photographer Jason Hudson has begun to post some of his more recent work on his new blog at jkellerphotography.blogspot.com and as you’ve probably come to expect, all the photos are pretty great. He’s been experimenting a bunch lately with film and different cameras and it seems like he excitedly barges in my house at least once a week to show me the latest thing he’s been working on. It’s all very cool stuff, so swing by and check it out.

- – -

And finally, I’d like to point out that this is my third post of the day. Technically, it was my second, but WordPress went haywire about an hour ago and deleted the original post, so I had to redo it. So if you want to be picky about things, this is my fourth post. Which completely shatters all previous records and expectations of productivity around these parts. In other words, I’m going to bed.

Just got out of the water after a chilly 30 minute set on White Lake, courtesy of my little sister. I gotta hand it to the Holland girls; they’re troopers when it comes to driving a boat.

Now get off the internet, go eat too much, watch some football, and pass out by 5:00. The pilgrims wouldn’t have it any other way.

This Woman is Unstoppable

Posted in Random with tags , , on October 24, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

My Mom’s a total bad ass. When I got to White Lake yesterday, the water was perfect but there was no one around to ride with. I was pretty bummed until Mom stepped up and drove for my first real set behind the boat in about three months. I rode terrible and it was pretty depressing, but it wasn’t that big of a deal because Mom was the only other person who saw it and she kind of has to love me anyway. And not only did she drive the boat yesterday, but she pulled me again this afternoon for a 45 minute set. She wasn’t exactly up to speed on how to drive for wakeskating and she still has a few things to work on, but we had a little training session this afternoon and I think she’s going to pick everything up pretty quickly from here on. So thanks for driving, Mom. You better get ready for Thanksgiving…

- – -

Attention Wilmington: if you like going to see good bands, you should probably go the The Soapbox on Tuesday night because Old Canes are playing a show. Although their website describes them as Folk Rock/Americana/Indie, I’ll just describe them as “The band from Tim and Cary’s part in No Name Losers” They’re one of those bands that most people can get down to no matter what kind of music they’re into. At any rate, I’m getting pretty excited about the show. In the immortal words of Will I. Am: “I’ve got a feeling that tonight’s going to be a good night.” Well, not necessarily tonight…I was thinking more about Tuesday night, but you get what I’m saying, right? It’s going to be fun.

Our Biggest Fan

Posted in Random on October 22, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

For those of you who don’t know him, our buddy Matt Schrier is the undisputed king of text messages, motivational speeches, and getting people stoked on whatever he’s stoked on at that particular moment. Matt’s been all over us for the past few months about how he’s reserving a space on the back window of his truck for a TA sticker and how much he wanted a TA t-shirt. Well, apparently he got sick of waiting. Dude went and made his own shirt and is rocking it as we speak (or type, or whatever). So you’re the man, Matt…thanks for all the support. I’m straight up beaming with pride right now.

This kind of coincides with all that talk about stuff in the pipeline and big moves on the horizon, but that’s another blog post for another day…

- – -

While I’m being all thankful, a big ol’ thank you goes out to the wonderful people of Dallas, Texas for hosting me last weekend. I had a large time with the Empire Wake crew and it was good to see the guys and gals from Texas Wake again. And oh yeah, I cruised around Dallas in an 18 wheeler cab. That’s right people, a big rig. It was was the most incredible thing I’ve ever done in my life. You can literally do whatever the hell you want when you’re in a big rig. It was a big milestone in my life. Good stuff.

Okay, so on Tuesday I went out on the river with Nick and Mark for a little sunset session. When I got to the boat ramp to meet up with them, I realized that I had my really cool, old school film camera in my car. It takes these awesome photos and there’s all kinds of light leaks and vignettes and it produces the most vibrant colors you’ve ever seen. Anyways, I thought it would be cool to snap off a few rolls of film that I happened to have. Check out the sweet shot I got of Mark doing a Method. You gotta love the vintage feel that digital photography simply can’t provide, am I right? *

* – This is all a lie. I took that photo with my cell phone and made it look like that with an app I downloaded off the internet. Looks cool though, doesn’t it?

- – -

Heads up Texas: I’m going to be all up in you this weekend. I’m flying out of ILM at 5:30 tomorrow and heading to the Lone Star state to call the shots for the Collegiate Wake Series’ stop in Dallas. I’m sure that good times will be had by all, so if you’re going to be in the area and happen to see this website for some reason, check out the contest. I’ll be the guy on the couch with a microphone. Come hang out and buy me a Lone Star or six. Several of you should probably expect late night voicemails/freestyles. You know who you are.

- – -

And finally, here’s the part of the post where I remind everyone about all the rad stuff we’re working on. Thinking outside the box. Widening our reach. Growing organically. Buying low, selling high. Big moves people. Just you wait.

In more wake-centric news, there’s tons of new jams coming from the Pacific Northwest. Our good buddies at Slingshot have just dropped their 2011 gear online, so go check it all out. They’ve got some wild new graphics, a few brand new shapes, and those mythical R.A.D. boots that Nick’s been rocking for the last few months. Hit up their wake site for more details and buy something while you’re there.

Meanwhile, down here in Wilmington, Nick just got his boat back from the shop. Over the past few days, we’ve had some of the nicest weather I’ve seen in a long time, so hopefully there’s a little bit more riding to be done before winter gets here. We’ve been talking about a few possible projects on the horizon and we’ve got some big stuff in store for the end of the year. Massive plans, people. Huge. Stay tuned.

Texts From Jason Hudson

Posted in Random with tags , on August 12, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Just got this text from photographer extraordinaire Jason Hudson:

“Just tried to text “Give me a call sometime” to a chick and my phone corrected it last minute to say “Give me anal sometime.”

This has nothing to do with anything, other than the fact that I thought it was awesome. Not much wakeboarding activity going on around here. Got a few things coming up, but it’s been kind of boring lately.

I’m starting to think that this place could use a makeover.

Go Buy Slick City

Seriously. Nick got this movie last week and I’ve probably watched it 7 or 8 times since then. It’s the most feel-good, fun times wake movie I’ve ever seen and it will undoubtedly go down as the best movie of the year. Highlights include:

  • Jeff McKee’s beard/riding
  • Everything James Balzer does
  • The Bob Soven/Rusty Malinoski romance
  • A really, really good closing section from Rusty (which I honestly didn’t think I’d ever say, but Nick and I were both super impressed with it)

So yeah, go get it. Greg Browning made it;  he’s the guy behind the Drive-Thru surf movies and TV shows, so that’s the kind of feel it has. Highly recommended.

In other news, we’ve got another video brewing, so expect that in the next week or so…

Current Jams:

  1. Slayer – “Reign in Blood”
  2. Slayer – “Seasons in the Abyss”
  3. Slayer – “South of Heaven”

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 15, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

I’m really not much of a “movie person.” I have a really short attention span and it’s pretty hard for me to stay focused on a movie long enough to…hey look at that bird outside my window. Jesus, that thing is huge. I really want some mexican food right now.

Anyway, maybe it’s due to my lack of focus, but I can watch trailers and opening credits for movies all day long. I guess it’s because they’re short and to the point and there’s not much of a story you have to follow, but I love them. Case in point, I wasn’t really into the Watchmen movie last year, but I seriously lost my shit over the opening sequence. Well, I saw  Zombieland the other day, and contrary to my usual cinematic experience, I was so pumped on the whole thing that I watched it again the next morning, which I’ve never done in my life. The whole movie is great but the opening credits absolutely blew me away. It has two of my favorite things in the world: slow motion and old Metallica; I kind of feel like it was made especially for me. Throw in some unreal motion graphics and you’ve got yourself quite the intro.

I’ve watched the intro at least ten times on YouTube since then, and every time I see it I get really excited. Check it out, but be warned that there’s a lot of blood and guts and zombies eating people.

I really want to go edit something. This summer is going to be great.

More Not Wakeboarding…

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 11, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

I absolutely lost my mind when I saw this on Sunday night.

I had heard that Arcade Fire had licensed their completely bad ass song “Wake Up” to the NFL for use during the Super Bowl and that all the proceeds from the licensing process were going to be donated to Hati Earthquake victims. I was kind of curious how the NFL was going to use the song, and my heart sank when I heard it being used two separate times before this with much, much less impressive results. Then this spot came on and I freaked.

There was also a VW spot that featured the song “Two Weeks” by Grizzly Bear, which is another solid jam. I’m really pumped that good bands are starting to end up in commercials like this more and more. I admit that Phoenix got kind of played out last year thanks to everyone jumping on “1901,” but I would way rather hear this stuff in commercials than the Black Eyed Peas or some shitty band like that.

Bonus Fact: If you check our stats, the most popular search engine term that people use to find our site  is “Black Eyed Peas” or some similar variation. It took a while to figure out why, but a while back, I wrote a post about bands that should never ever be in another wakeboard video. Black Eyed Peas were one of the offenders, and that one post has led hundreds of people looking for information on the band to this website. I can only imagine how angry they were once they got here…

Not Wakeboarding…

Posted in Random with tags , , on February 8, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Last week, I got a Facebook message from a girl I went to high school with, asking for my address because she’s planning my 10 year high school reunion.

As the reality of that cold, depressing fact was sinking in, I saw this sketch an Saturday Night Live the other night and all I could think about was getting my high school band back together and playing at the reunion. We could play pretty much the entire Blink 182 and NOFX catalogs, so as you can imagine, we were a pretty big hit at Harrells Christian Academy during the late 90′s. This is pretty much the best thing I’ve seen on SNL in years.

As a sidenote, I saw Metallica: Behind the Music last night and so this morning I’m listening to the first four records in chronological order. Highly recommended.

Vote For Jason!

Posted in News, Random with tags on December 21, 2009 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, so NC resident wake photographer Jason Hudson is in the running for Alliance’s Weekly Photo Battle. His shot of Lake Norman’s very own Ben Pierce is up on the Alliance site and voting just began today, so be sure to roll over there, cast your vote and maybe leave a funny comment or something.

In other Jason Hudson news, dude just moved in with me in Davidson, so Lake Norman needs to get ready for a 2010 season chock full of riding, shooting and, more than likely, bowling. Until then, check out his shot on Alliance’s website and show NC some love.

Also, a quick little update on the No Name Losers DVD: there have been a whole bunch of setbacks and I know it seems like I’m totally slacking on getting this thing done, but hang in there. I should be getting the DVD artwork back tomorrow and we’ll be shipping them out as soon as humanly possible after the Christmas holiday. Thanks for the patience and stay tuned.

What Happens in G-Vegas…

Before I met Chris Hopf, I would see his name on End of Rope Gang and wonder to myself how you were supposed to pronounce his last name. I mean, no offense, but P and F aren’t exactly two letters you see paired up very often. Was the P silent? Was the F silent? Either way, that would mean at least a quarter of the dude’s last name was for decorative purposes only, which led me to belive one thing: the guy was a weirdo and shouldn’t be trusted.

Well, I was just being silly because when I finally met Chris I found out he’s and awesome dude who’s got a knack for building rails and then showing them who’s boss on his wakeboard. He was the mastermind behind the Wake Farm, a legendary wake park that has since seen its last session (which we were there for; keep an eye out for some footy this fall), but Chris has got some new stuff up his sleeve near Greenville, NC and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be awesome. He just started a little blog where you can see the progress at the park, so check it out and bookmark it, because I have a feeling that you’re all going to want to see what goes down at this place. Tim Boyer goes out there quite a bit and he calls me all the time saying it’s going to be the coolest thing that NC wakeboarding has ever seen. Check it out:

www.eastcoastwake.blogspot.com

Before I go, I want it to be known that I absolutely DO NOT condone anyone calling the town of Greenville  “G-Vegas,” but I had to come up with a title and that’s all I could think of. Do as I say, not as I do, children.

New Profile Pics!

As some of you may or may not know, the Atlas Wake Series blew through Smith Mountain Lake a while back. My recollection of the event is fuzzy at best, so I’m psyched that Jason Hudson was around to document things. Dude’s been shooting with the crew down in Wilmington for just about a year now and he’s gotten some pretty awesome stuff of everyone. So much awesome stuff in fact, that Jason is pretty much the official Facebook Profile Picture Supplier to Teleprompted Anthems. I’m rocking a new profile pic from that weekend and it makes me look way cooler than I’ll ever be in real life, so thanks Jason.

Here’s a little taste of the stuff he got that weekend at SML. If you want to see more, check out his photo gallery of the event at Alliancewake.com or head on over to his website, Jkellerphotography.com. He’s got a ton of wake stuff on there, plus surfing, motocross, really hot girls, and a bunch of other pretty photography stuff.

PS – That last shot is of Lake Norman’s very own  Stephen Pierce. Dude straight up killed it at SML and walked away with a first place in Open. For the past few days, Clay, Ronnie and Barnes have been at my house in Davidson trying to get some shots for the video and Stephen has been nice enough to let us use his boat for filming and riding. Thanks Broseph!

I found this Nike SB spot this morning and I got to admit, it came at just the right time. It’s only Tuesday, I’m stuck at work, and I just got an email from my Mom saying that the starter on our boat shat the bed this weekend. But after seeing this spot, I’m in a pretty good mood.

I’m going to learn everything I can about skimboarding, just so Nick and I can make a movie called “Skimulus Package.” I should go ahead and get that bad boy trademarked because it’s such a bad ass name, I would imagine that someone will probably have stolen it by this time next week.

PS – Smith Mountian Lake was off the chain. See you doodz at Lake Norman.

Random Thoughts

Posted in Random on June 12, 2009 by telepromptedanthems

So if you’re one of the four people that actually visit this website regularly (hi Mom), I guess you’ve probably noticed that we haven’t posted any new videos since back in the winter. Well, we’ve been hoarding footage like a bunch of selfish five-year-olds and we’re not letting any of it see the light of day until the time is right. When will the time be right, you ask? That’s a great question, and I’ll have an answer for you one of these days. In the meantime though, here’s what’s been on my mind lately.

1. Harley Clifford is a damn beast. Watch this. Try to ignore the super awkward shots of a 15 year old just hanging around the house without a shirt on, flexing for the camera.

2. Is anyone else getting annoyed with people referring to wakeboarding as “shredding?” I agree it was kind of a funny, quirky way to say it at first, but now people say it all the time and it’s starting to grate on my nerves. Get on Facebook and check people’s status: “Going Shredding.” “Getting my shred on.” Shredding all day.” Missing the Shred.” Anyone want to shred?” It doesn’t end, and it seems like everyone and their cousin says it now. I’m not going to name any names, but come on guys. Like Uncle Joey says: “Cut it out.”

3. Has anyone seen any shots of people wakeboarding in short sleeve button up shirts yet?

4. I wakeboarded for the first time in about a year the other day. As you might have guessed, it was brutal. Everyone in Wilmington, on the other hand, seems to be riding really well.

5. If you’re looking for some new jams, do yourself a favor and check out new records from Phoenix, Isis, Japandroids, Big Business, and Kylesa.

6. Since we don’t have any new videos, I’m going to leave you with this one.

IN YOUR FACE, NICK G!

Posted in News, Random on May 4, 2009 by telepromptedanthems

Our good buddy Nick G. took it upon himself to provide a counterpoint to my “Hot or Not 2009″ post, and I feel the need to defend my honor and reputation by responding to his criticisms. You may wonder why I would choose to do it as a new post and not in response to his comment. Well, the answer is because I haven’t posted anything in a while and I wanted to make sure that everyone saw me as I dispelled every single thing he said.

First, if you haven’t seen Nick’s comment, you can go check that out right here.

And now, my rebuttal.

Nick, I respect your opinion. But I feel as if I must respond to several of your arguments, as the majority of them simply do not hold water. I’m going to address your comments individually, so as not to confuse any issues.

1. This is the one argument I can’t really argue with: loud trunks do in fact sell very well. You know what else sells very well? Hannah Montana CD’s, Ed Hardy  t-shirts and those stickers that you always see on mini-vans that show a family of stick figures with a character to represent each parent, child and pet. The point is, just because something sells well doesn’t make it cool. Oftentimes, it makes it really lame. I think Kenny Powers said it best when he stated “You know I love you, I think you’re great. But you’ve got clothes like a fuckin’ dickhead.”

2. No self respecting surfer will wear trunks over his fullsuit. This is a cold, hard fact. If you really see this as much as you say, there are only 2 possible explanations: 1) That surfer is making fun of wakeboarders, or 2) That surfer is a massive tool. Either way, it doesn’t help your argument.

3. Jealous? Listen kid, I was doing melan 180′s into the flats before you could even say “Froggy Soven.” I don’t really think I need to say anything else.

4. Glad to see you have some kind of sense.

5. The System 2.0 is bad ass, and in retrospect, I probably should have included it on the list. But it’s apples and oranges compared to a winch. Besides the obvious cost difference, you can use a winch in far more places and transport it far easier than a 2.0 setup. And that’s what makes the whole winch thing so cool: versatility. Plus, I don’t have a pond or private lake in my backyard where I could keep a System 2.0, and I’m willing to bet that the majority of riders don’t either.

6. Tell your friend to take themselves to work. No one like a mooch.

Feel free to continue with your criticisms at your convenience, but do be prepared for me to absolutely disprove beyond a shadow of a doubt every argument you produce. And I hope your knee feels better.

Hot or Not: Spring 2009

Posted in Random on April 8, 2009 by telepromptedanthems

Wakeboarding trends come and go…Some are ahead of their time and some completely wear out their welcome. In an attempt to keep you on the cutting edge of trends and fashion in the wake industry, I’ve provided this handy little guide for 2009. It’s kind of a long read, but you should read it, know it, and live it. Whatever you do, just don’t go against what I say, because this is the internet, and opinions are facts around here.

We’ll start with the “Not’s” because they’re more prominent in the sport and it’s always fun to call people out.

5. Loud Boardshorts - Come on people, this is not the early 90′s. It’s not even cool in an ironic sense anymore; dudes in 2009 shouldn’t be dressing ironically. The neon and the wild patterns need to go, otherwise we’ll never get respect from the other boardsports. And we all know that’s the most important thing, right???

stupid

4. Fullsuits With Boardshorts - I know, we’ve all probably done it at some point. But just because I had a Vanilla Ice tape in third grade doesn’t mean I still bump it. Jeff McKee effectively put this trend to rest recently with a few clicks on the keyboard over at Alliance’s website. He said “Fullsuits with boardshorts are the number one indicator of a small wiener.” Well played, sir. Well played.

3. Big Ol’ Melan 180′s - There was a time not too long ago when this trick would have been at the number 1 spot on the “Hot” list, but times they have a-changed and this trick is officially played out. When you watch the Pro Tour on TV and see every single rider do the same trick in their pass, it gets kind of old. A big Melan 180 into the flats has become the S-Bend of the 21st century. Time to move on, fellas.

2. Bandanas - Seriously, you guys are not in a biker gang. Like a lot of great fashion trends, this one seemed to start on the West Coast (most notably Canyon Lake, CA) and migrate across the country. Wakeboarders have been spotted with bandanas and other cranial accessories for several years now, and normal people everywhere cant help but wonder why. There’s no good reason why wakeboarders should dress like Aunt Jemima, unless maybe because you have really long hair. Which brings us to our #1 played out trend of 2009:

1. Really Long Hair - This has been a growing problem for some time now (see what I did there?) and it’s time to cut it out (I’m on fire!). It’s gotten to the point where I can’t tell the difference between Surf Expo and a Widespread Panic show. You guys are not Samson, you can cut that shit off and still be able to do your tricks. You’ll probably be better off because your hair won’t be slapping you in the eyeballs and you won’t have to wear that stupid bandana. Even Eric Ruck cut his hair last fall, and that dude pretty much led the hair-farming revolution of the past five years. It’s wakeboarding in 2009, and long haired freaky people need not apply. (Note – Collin Harrington’s the man, but I found a shot of him committing two wake fashion faux pas at the same time and couldn’t help but use it.)

Now, on to the “Hot” list. Keep your eyes open, cause you’re about to see this stuff everywhere you turn.

progress1

5. Riding in Short Sleeve Button Down Shirts - Wake-a-holics like myself usually avoid a collared shirt like the plague, but we all have to grow up sometime. People have been riding in t-shirts for years, mainly because it looks cool, it feels cool, and it covers up a farmer’s tan really well. Now, you can get the same effects of riding in a t-shirt, but look a little more grown up while you do it. Plus, you’ll already have a collared shirt ready to go when it’s time to go looking for a job. It’s a win-win!

4. Summerbirds in the Cellar - These guys are hotter than Hell in the wake scene right now. They’ve got mags reviewing their records, pro riders rocking their t-shirts, and video guys using the jams in their movies. I hope these guys have some polarized shades, because their future is looking bright. They’ve got a new record coming out, so go scoop it up and play it on the boat. It’ll probably make you ride better. Note – An honorable mention has to go to Young Brother, who also appear to be kicking out some quality jams.

3. Winches – They’re not really a new idea, but winches are going to straight blow up in 2009. Why? Because we’re currently in an apocalyptic recession and people are freaking out about money. Desperate times call for desperate measures and if you can’t afford a boat, then you’re going to have to figure out another way to get yer shred on. You’re going to see a lot guys taking it to the streets in ’09, doing really cool things at spots that were once deemed untouchable. You’ll also probably see a lot of video of riders getting hassled by the police, which will both increase your core score and make us laugh at the same time. I just hope there’s not a widespread drought anytime soon, because we’d really be screwed then.

n40503601_34204312_6109

2. Flex Boards – If you’ve ever read these pages before, you know that we have a huge boner for Slingshot Wakeboards. But it’s not just us; people everywhere are figuring out that flex technology just might be the wave of the future, and it’s resulted in the biggest technological revolution the sport has seen since every manufacturer decided to take a jigsaw to their boards and call it a “bat tail design.” New players are popping up left and right: Slingshot, Company, Humanoid, not to mention the more established brands tinkering around with flex technology. Plus, it’s the single most talked about topic on internet discussion boards, just beating out “Which Boat is Best?” and “Why Aren’t the Girls On Tour This Year?” for the top spot. When the history books have been written and we look back on 2009, it will be known as “The Year That Wake Flexed Its Muscle.” Well, probably not, but it should be, because that sounds really bad ass.

1. Wakeskating - Again, definitley not new, but you’re going to see much more cool stuff from the wakeskaters than you will from the wakeboarders this year, because on top of all the economic reasons (see #2), it’s just cooler. I know Nick is going to give me hell for saying that, but it’s true. Wakeskating is at a point right now that is very similar to the early days of wakeboarding when new riders were coming out of nowhere and blowing minds. It’s just going to be way more exciting to watch unfold and these guys are going to have jaws dropping and cameras firing for the rest of year.  It’s going to be cool to see what goes down…

To sum things up, I can’t believe that you read this much. Seriously, that was so long; you should give yourself a hand. Now go throw away your bandanas, get a haircut and get out there with your wakeskate, winch and button down shirt. You’re now on the cutting edge of wakeboarding fashion…You’re welcome. Now make me proud out there.

Sorry folks. If you’re going through wake withdrawals, go to Wakeworld and check out their forum. I hear that Aaron Rathy is riding for Byerly now and Jimmy LaRiche landed a 1080. Yeah baby, a mother-effing TEN EIGHTY!!!

However, despite the lack of activity up here in NC, a little bird told me that Nick and Clay, wakeboarding’s hottest new couple, are on a little Florida getaway to visit some friends and rumor has it they took a bad ass new camera with them. Stay tuned to see what went down.

Anyway, here’s something funny that has nothing whatsoever to do with wakin.’

I have a Brand new in-box PlayStation 3 gaming system that you can obtain for a special price. It is the 80gb model and includes 2 brand new dualshock 3 wireless controllers.I do not want your money or thanks. To obtain this top of line gaming system, you must let me punch you in the face three times and your child must be present. If you have multiple children, I would prefer you bring your youngest child. This is not a joke. If you want to be your children’s hero on Christmas, we will meet at a location that I will specify to you, and I will proceed to punch you in the face in front of your child. You may brace yourself if you want before I begin to punch you, for I am a man of large stature (6’6, 275lbs) In between each punch, I want you to instruct your child not cry. If your child so much as whimpers, the deal is off. Don’t think I am a man to be trifled with or that you and a friend can ambush me. I am a former NAVY SEAL and a veteran of the Irag War.

This is the best deal you will ever find on a PlayStation 3. A truly unique offer. You are welcome to inspect the product for authenticity before the deal is done.
Email me for more specific details and we can arrange a rendevous.

Merry Christmas.

Top Five Bands That Should Never Be In Another Wakeboard Video. Ever.

Posted in Random with tags , on October 2, 2008 by telepromptedanthems

If you’ve ever met me or had a conversation with me, you probably know that I can occasionally have some rather strong opinions. Well, the good thing about having a blog is the illusion that the general public actually gives a shit about your opinions. I also have this thing about making lists all the time. So, with that in mind, here is an issue I feel quite strongly about: the top five bands who should never again provide the soundtrack to a wakeboarding video. Because this is really important stuff, you know?

5. MGMT - These guys haven’t been popular for too long, but already they’ve taken the wakeboarding world by storm. They’re everywhere; over the weekend of Expo, I probably heard them on like fifty separate occasions. They’ve only been in one video that I know of (Ben Greenwood’s part in Drive), but I can already see them getting out of hand. We need to nip this one in the bud, people.

4. Pennywise – I admit that I loved Full Circle as much as anyone, but for the love of God, someone tell me why it’s so hard for editors to let go of this band? Sure they were all the rage back in ’98, but it’s the 21st century now and they’ve released essentially the same record no less than eight times. Get over it, guys. Extra shame on anyone who actually picks one of their best songs for a video but decides to use a crappy, lackluster version for the part. I’m looking at you, Kilgus.

3. The Black Eyed Peas – I can think of two video parts they’ve provided the soundtrack for and you know what? That’s way too many. This band is the absolute worst. I would rather hear my only child screaming in terror from a burning building than hear anything this band has released ever again.

2.The Faint - The first couple times we heard them, it seemed like a match made in heaven. They bridged the gap between electronica and rock so well that it seemed like the perfect combination; jams that could get you fired up to ride and then fired up to shake that ass. The songs had really cool beats and they provided editors with lots of opportunities to make creative cuts, so they popped up in a few videos. And then they popped up in some more videos. Until finally, they were in no less than two videos a year in wakeboarding alone; not to mention the countless surf, skate, and snow flicks they’ve provided a soundtrack for. They just put out a new record, so God only knows what 2009 has in store; hopefully they won’t get as much attention since they left their longtime label Saddle Creek Records. Which leads me to the number one spot:

1. Any Artist on Saddle Creek Records – As much as I appreciate pretty much everything they do, I believe the blame for the Saddle Creek/wakeboarding phenomenon rests solely on the shoulders of Thomas Horrell, Chase Heavener, and the whole Attention Deficit crew. Remember Invisible Cinema? That movie was just barely over twenty minutes long and had at least three Saddle Creek songs on it. Admittedly, it’s kind of their thing and I can’t really knock them for having their own style, but they opened a flood gate that desperately needs to be closed. The funniest thing is that I’ve seen parts from other editors that used, say, a Cursive song and you could tell that they were trying to edit the way the Attention Deficit guys edited. They would add shots of a TV full of static and a bunch of tight cuts with the music and it was so obvious that they were copying the stuff they saw in Invisible Cinema. Anyway, long story short, stick a fork in the Saddle Creek thing; it’s time to move on to a new label.

I wonder who MGMT is signed to?

EDIT – I have no idea why the Faint artwork is centered. It lines up right if you click on the post itself, so get off my back.

KNOCK IT OFF. Your commercials are the audio/visual equivalent of AIDS. Every time I hear one of those stupid songs, it makes me want to shake a baby or punch an old lady in the face. Who is the guy that came up with these commercials? If I ever find out who is responsible, I will quit my job and make it my life mission to somehow get that individual fired.

For the love of God, take these commercials off the air.

Love,

Brad

Pretty psyched right now; I just booked my flight for Surf Expo. Although it’s taken a year and a half, living in Greensboro has finally paid off, in the form of a nonstop flight to Orlando for $60 round trip. It would cost way more than that just to get down there if I was driving. I’m all for road trips, but I just couldn’t turn that down. Of course, it came out to about 100 bucks after all the fees and the convenience charges and the f__k you taxes that they added on, but whatevs. I just hope they stay in business long enough to get me there and back.

To add to my good mood, I just got back from seeing “The Dark Knight.” All I’m going to say is that it will go down in history as the most awesome GD movie of 2008, no questions asked.

Also, has anyone noticed that every video we’ve done all year has been taken from the same year old footage? Everyone call Nick and tell him to get in the game and send me some tapes to edit.

Looks like shit got real up in here while I was gone. And I thought I was the only one who took his frustrations out on the internet; well done Nick!

As far as the grammar goes, everyone pretty much knows that if the post looks like a 5-year-old special ed student wrote it, chances are pretty good that Nick was the one who posted it. Just saying.

Since I haven’t been around in a while, I figured I’d leave you with some random thoughts to discuss amongst yourselves until next time.

1. Liquid Force makes great wakeskates. I just got a 42″ Reed and it rode like a dream in the rough waters of White Lake.

2. Forget Drive, I can’t wait to see The Dark Knight. I am also really looking forward to the DVD release of Iron Man since I missed it in theaters.

3. On Friday I’m getting an iPhone. I will then be the coolest person you know. I’m accepting applications now to decide who will be the first person I call. If you’re interested, get your submission in ASAP; there’s only 2 days, 18 hours and 20 minutes until they go on sale.

4. I want Carrie Underwood to be my girlfriend.
