Autumn on the Cape Fear

Posted in Features, Wakeboarding with tags , , on December 28, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

A few years ago, I went to see Metallica in Charlotte with Bob and DJSK from Red Bull. It’s the most money I’ve ever spent to see a band but it was awesome. Like really awesome. Way more awesome than I was expecting from those old farts. Anyway, Richmond, VA’s Lamb of God opened up for them, and I wasn’t getting down to their set at all, but right at the end they gave a shout out to Wrightsville Beach and played the theme from the movie Cape Fear. Being the proud North Carolinian that I am, I was pumped on it and kept thinking how bad ass it would be to use that song in something.

Fast forward two years later: Nick and Clay have been gathering clips over the past few months and wanted to do a quick 2011 wrap up. As we were logging the footage, I remembered that Fantomas had recorded a version of the Cape Fear theme, so I threw together a completely unnecessary opener which totally rips off the title sequence from the movie. Add that to a bunch of riding, shooting guns, and the song Wires (my and Clay’s top song of 2011), you got yourself a f__kin’ party.

Things have been kinda slow around here, and I’m not sure when that’s actually going to change since we’re officially into the winter months. But for now, sit back, watch the boys kill it,  and enjoy the last few days of 2011.

A Conversation with Jason Hudson

Posted in Random with tags , , on November 27, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

If you’ve seen this site at all over the past three years, chances are that you’ve seen some photos by Jason Hudson. Jason’s one of our best friends and he has some serious skills behind the lens of a camera, so he started coming out and shooting photos around the time we were working on No Name Losers. He’s stuck around ever since and he’s taken a ton of great photos of all the boys around the region. He’s had photos run in Alliance, Unleashed, and he has a sweet blog of his own that he’s constantly updating with new stuff (not to mention the fact that he’s hands down the best Facebook profile picture photographer I know).

Jason has an art show coming up this week at Bottega Art and Wine here in Wilmington, so I sat down and spoke to him a little bit about his photography and what we can expect at the show itself. He’ll be exhibiting work with local photographers Keith Ketchum and Ross Rogers with background jams provided by The Goldie Hahn Solos. I helped him take his artwork to the gallery a few days ago, and I’m here to tell you that it all looks incredible.

The show is this Friday, December 2nd. If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Wilmington and you don’t go check it out, you are seriously blowing it. Jason is a really talented photographer and one of the best dudes I know, so be sure to head downtown Friday night, check out some unreal photography, drink some booze, and give him a high five. I guarantee that you won’t regret it. Hell, bring some cash and scoop up a piece or two. You know that your living room could use an artistic upgrade, am I right?

Check out www.kellerphoto.net and www.bottegagallery.com for more information. And thanks for everything over the past few years, Jason. We’re stoked for you, buddy.

For the past two years, Clay and I have been talking about starting a Misfits cover band. We’d practice all year and then only play one show on Halloween night. We always talk about how we’d get super drunk and all our friends would come out to see us and it would be the time of our lives. Then every year, we never actually do it and this night rolls around and we’re left with only our dreams of how epic it could actually be.

So we’re doing it next year. You hear that, everybody? It’s on the internet now, so we kinda have to follow through with it. Stay on us about it and we’ll see you guys in 364 days.

A Quickie with Jeff House & Ben Greenwood

Posted in Wakeboarding with tags , on October 11, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, so it may have taken a bit longer than I initially promised, but let’s be honest: when have I ever been good at meeting deadlines? This is just a short little sequence, but we’ve been sitting on this footage for a while now and figured we might as well do something with it. All this went down when Mark and Nick were in Orlando for Memorial Day weekend and got a chance to ride with Jeff House and Ben Greenwood.

Jeff’s a good friend of ours and I was really pumped on this footage because it was good to see him riding again after a bad knee injury last summer. Well, after I finished editing, I sent a link to Jeff so he could check it out and he informed me that he had just blown his other ACL and was out of the game for a little while longer. It’s a huge bummer, so pour one out for Jeff. Hope you have a speedy recovery, buddy.

- – -

While we’re on the subject of pouring one out for shitty knees, you might as well pour out a little bit more for our very own Mark Rugala and Geoffrey Barnes. Both of them have had surgery recently to fix a busted knee, so they’re out of commission for a little while as well. From what I hear, Mark is already giving the stationary bike hell and Geoffrey has his own personal nurse keeping him company via Skype, so I’m sure they’ll make physical therapy their bitch and be back in action before too long.

- – -

In other news, I’ve still got some leftover footage to go through, although I know better than to provide a timeline to expect some kind of finished product. Just stay tuned…

One For the Birthday Boy

Posted in Wakeboarding with tags , on October 6, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Our buddies at Aussie Island are in the process of updating their website, so I went digging through the archives trying to find some footy of the team to put on the new site. I just found  Clay Martin’s remix section from the No Name Losers DVD bonus features, which is fitting because tomorrow is Clay’s birthday. So in the spirit of celebration, here it is. Between you and me, I’m pretty sure his better than his official section in the movie.

Happy birthday, dood…

Two Year Anniversary

Posted in News with tags , on October 3, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Exactly two years ago right this minute, I was sitting on Justin Sellers’ couch fighting a strong urge to either pass out or throw up or both.

In less than three hours, we were supposed to premiere No Name Losers in downtown Wilmington and I was a complete wreck. I was convinced that we had a bunch of our friends and family showing up to a placed called Club Diesel to see a giant piece of shit movie that we spent the last year of our lives making and no one was going to like it. So we did what any respectable men would do in the face of adversity: we took Bluto’s advice and started pounding PBR tall boys as soon as we got to the venue.

Everything that could go wrong, did. A hard drive failed, a cable was missing, the DVD player wasn’t outputting sound; you name it, it didn’t work right. Everything finally fell into place right before we were supposed to start the movie and I don’t know if it was the nerves or if it was the fact that I had only gotten about 12 hours of sleep that entire week, but I was pretty much hammered by the time the opening sequence began. From that point on, everything went off pretty much perfect and it turned into one of the best nights of my life. People seemed to like the movie and we went on to have an extremely large time for the rest of the evening.

Two years later, the movie has been played over 13,000 times online. I know this is a really low number when you compare it to the Leprechaun in Alabama or the video of the 7-year-old car thief, but to us, it’s f__king crazy. Thanks so much to whoever has watched it or bought a DVD. I still really hope you don’t think it sucks.

Feed The Machine

Posted in News with tags , on September 7, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

The dudes over at Humanoid have started to slowly release some goods from their team trip to Lake Powell earlier this summer and they just dropped a new video called Feed the Machine, Episode 1. It’s features a few of the Humanoid guys, and I know I’m biased, but I’m happy as hell to report that our very own Mark Rugala was one of them. Mark and the boys were definitely throwing down, so click here to check it out and be sure to keep an eye out for future episodes.

On a somewhat related note, if you’re not concerned with good riding as much as wanting to see someone just get f__ked up, click here to see our new buddy Bob Sichel almost dying on the Lake Powell trip. And be careful out there, kids.

(And just in case anyone was wondering, like usual, I shamelessly stole that photo from the Humanoid website. It’s how I roll.)

New Ride

Posted in News with tags on August 29, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

What started off as a pretty average day just got a whole lot better because thanks to the dudes at Humanoid Wakeboards and my local Fed Ex guy, I just unwrapped my first new wakeboard since 2007.  The board looks unreal, so I’m planning on trying to bum a ride behind Capt. Martin’s vessel to give it a whirl later this week. A bunch of people have made fun of me in the past for still using a pair of old Liquid Force Ultra Suction bindings, but I have to say that it seems like the Oracle was destined to be paired up with them because they look amazing together. Big thanks to the guys over at Humanoid H.Q. for the updated ride. My stokemeter is officially at Matt Schrier levels right now.

A Weekend with Humanoid

Posted in Features, Wakeboarding with tags on August 19, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, so I’ve got good news and bad news. You know how every summer, there’s about a month-long period where nothing gets posted and there’s no activity on the site whatsoever? Well the bad news is that this year, that month turned into about three months. The good news is that it’s finally over!

A while back, Nick and Mark went down to Orlando for a weekend and met up with Mark’s Humanoid teammate Bob Sichel. As soon as they got down there, they got right to work and banged out a few quick sessions before heading back up to NC.

We’ve been sitting on the footage for a while now, and that video up there is what came of it all. We’re hanging on to a few more clips from some other dudes, so stay tuned to see what else went down. I mean, it’s not like we could release it all at once. It’s been three months since the last post, so we kind of have to pace ourselves here, you know?

- – -

Speaking of Humanoid, after you watch the video, be sure to head over to their site and check out the goods. They have some snazzy new boards for 2011 and they’re putting together an impressive team of riders. Plus, Mark just got back from a big team trip out west and he says that the stuff they have up their sleeves for 2012 is looking sick.

Rest easy, people. Regular posting has returned. I know you missed us.

Devise and Conquer

Posted in News with tags , on May 26, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

The dudes over at Transworld Wake have this pretty cool contest going on right now that puts four wakeskate teams against one another to see who can build some cool stuff to hit and come up with the best video. I just watched all the entries and sweet baby Jesus, Obscura’s team completely annihilated the competition.

None of the videos were bad, mind you, but Obscura’s entry has arguably the best team in the biz, a bunch of fire, a fake cityscape, and this one little rail where they did a bunch of shuvits through a hoop, not to mention the best soundtrack out of the bunch. I mean, honestly, it’s not even close. If Obscura doesn’t win this, I’m gonna show up on the doorstep of the Bonnier building in Orlando because someone has some serious explaining to do.

I’ve already seen some talk on the internets that the contest is really similar to stuff that’s been going on in skateboarding or surfing for years, but so is pretty much everything cool about wakeboarding, so whatever. It’s a pretty cool idea, so check out the videos and vote for your favorite here.

Getting Rowdy in Bladen County

Posted in News with tags , , , on May 24, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

I’m slacking big time on this one, but I just sat down to capture the footage from our trip to White Lake weekend before last. Nearly a dozen of us invaded my Mom’s house for the weekend and a bank rail was built next to my dock. Matt Schrier brought down a kicker, which was also set up next to the dock and before we knew what was happening, a bunch of people had come over and there was a massive wakeboarding bro-down at my house on Saturday afternoon. The highlights of the evening came when Connor landed a 540 off the kicker, which was then followed up by Schrier landing his first 180 off the kicker. Everyone on the dock was going apeshit and some of my neighbors were even getting into it and cheering whenever something was landed. It was honest to God the most fun I’ve had wakeboarding in years, and I didn’t even get in the water.

I also have to give it up to Mark Rugala, who hands down wins the MVP of the trip. The guy went to White Lake to get some work done; he spent the entire weekend with either a handle, a drill, or a beer in his hand. So good job, Mark; we salute you. If you want to let Mark know how awesome he his, you should follow him on the Twitter page that Schrier created for him over the weekend. Check him out: @dillion00fmx.

All in all, it was a solid weekend. We had a blast, a bunch of good wakeboarding went down, and a whole new boatload of people have been introduced to the greatness that is Pole Golf.

Lessons Learned in Greenville

Posted in News with tags , , on May 12, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

I’m admittedly a little late with this post, but last weekend, Chris and the crew over at East Coast Wake Park hosted their second Summer Slider Series stop (go ahead, try to say it five times fast) and I made the trip up to get some shots of the boys. Our good buddy/intern Connor Buss put together a sweet little summary of the event, so check that out for the rundown. It was a Slingshot-filled podium with Brian Reeder taking the win along with Nate Perry, Oli Derome, and Zach Schneider rounding out 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively.

The whole weekend was a good time, and it actually turned out to be educational. A few of the lessons I learned:

  • Playing wingman for Geoffrey can be exhausting, and potentially hazardous, it would seem.
  • Oli Derome can sing like a bird.
  • Monster’s new drink Rehab is fantastic. I figure they called it that because as soon as you take your first sip, you’re thinking about how awesome it would be if there were booze in it. Dangerous.
  • Sam Baker’s greatest talent is probably climbing trees.
  • In Greenville, the kids go nuts when they play “All the Small Things” in the bar. It’s like the new “Living on a Prayer.”
  • Tim Boyer still has the best one-liners out of everyone I know.
  • Brian Reeder can hit rails really well.
  • Actually, the entire pro division could hit rails really well.
  • According to no less than 20 drunk college students, I look just like Zach Galifinakis.
All in all, a successful weekend. ECWP is hosting a bunch more events this summer, so be sure to give ‘em a thumbs up on Facebook and check out some of the stuff the have in store.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Posted in Random with tags on May 6, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Just got finished putting together a little prize package for Wilt C, who is the big winner of the contest we put up last week. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally on the way. Sorry for the hold-up, Wilt. He was the first person to correctly identify the title of the last post as a line from the song “Springtime” by the band Leatherface (he got bonus points for also noting that Hot Water Music covered the song). It’s a great jam, and appropriate, considering the fact that Springtime is in full effect. It should be noted that Erin, our resident PR and marketing genius, also got the correct answer mere minutes after Wilt sent his email in (Sorry E, don’t be a hater). Anyway, Wilt’s email never included his last name, so I’m going to go ahead and assume that it was Wilt Chamberlin and that he’s a big fan of our stuff, which is really exciting…

- – -

Also a little delayed, I wanted to be sure to send a big ol’ congratulations to White Lake OG Tyler Bumgarner, who got married in Virginia Beach last Saturday. The wedding was a blast; I drank a bunch of whiskey, took the microphone from the band and made a big impromptu speech that most likely made no sense whatsoever. Also, here’s a little factoid: Tyler got arrested once for dry humping a woman in a pig costume at White Lake. True story. Anyway, he and his brother took me wakeboarding for the first time and I’m sure he still kills it behind the boat whenever he gets a chance to ride. I know he checks the site from time to time, so congrats Tyler. See you this summer…

A Little Bit of Springtime in the Back of My Mind

Posted in Random with tags , , on April 26, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

It’s been a long winter, but Spring is officially here in NC, so Nick and Mark have been out getting things done with our resident photographer, Jason Hudson.  Here are a few shots that Jason got the other day, which I blatantly stole from his bookmark-worthy website. Check it out to see a bunch more of his work. Highly recommended browsing.

Nick was so excited to ride that he forgot to take off his sweatshirt!

Thanks for the shots, Jason. It’s just about time to dust off the video camera too…

A Recap of Nick’s Spring Break

Posted in Features, Wakeboarding with tags , , on April 10, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Last month, Nick went down to spend a his Spring Break at Adam Fields’ house in sunny Orlando, Florida. He convinced Sam Baker to tag along for the trip and I’m here to tell you that the boys got some serious work done.

Always a gracious host, Adam was up every morning cooking breakfast and making sure everyone got out on the water at a decent hour. He even went the extra mile and set up a few sessions with several other riders, so Nick got to shoot every day they were there. Hyperlite’s Danny Thollander and CWB’s Nick Jones rode one day, Adam’s Liquid Force teammate Scott Stewart came by for a while, and one of Slingshot’s new kids on the block, Oli Derome, took a set one morning (and by the way, according to Alliance’s Twitter page, Oli landed a wake to wake 1080 today. Dude is no joke.).

And then there was Adam. Nick shot at least seven or eight sets of Adam throughout the weekend and I was flipping out this week as I was going through the footage. I seriously can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer brings. Check out the video and get excited for 2011.

Go Buy “More Than Machines”

Posted in News with tags , , , on March 21, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Seriously. Go buy it right now. I just got finished watching it, and I’m seriously blown away. It’s been a long time since a wakeskate video this progressive has come along, and if you consider yourself even a casual wakeskater, this needs to be on your hard drive.

Tad Mathews is the guy behind the movie, and I’m here to say that this guy has got things figured out. He’s made a really entertaining video that features unreal riding from the best wakeskaters in the world and best  of all, it’s not plagued with a bunch of over-editing or flashy effects or other gimmicky video trickery. The soundtrack is laid back and fits each section really well. There’s a perfect mix of  boats, jet skis, rails, and winching. Even the running time is what I would consider perfection, clocking in at just about half an hour. I know it might sound like I’m just blowing sunshine up this guy’s ass, but this movie is exactly how I think wake movies should be and now all I want to do is get to work on something myself.

While the whole thing was really good, several things stood out after one viewing:

  • Austin Pastura – Truth be told, it’s kind of depressing watching kids like this. He makes everything look so easy that you almost start to think that it’s not that hard. As far as I know, this is his first official video part aside from some web videos, and I don’t think he could ask for a much better formal introduction.
  • Stu Shinn - This guy is f_____g retarded when it comes to stuff behind the boat. I’m talking wake-to-wake kickflips and frontside flips where he catches the board about four feet off the water. It’s seriously insane.
  • Ben Horan – I’m not really a fan of the whole hippie wakeboarding/wakeskating movement (ie: endless supplies of tie dye shirts, excessively long hair, ironic facial hair, etc…). It’s just not my style. However, Ben Horan will forever get a pass from me for all that hippie stuff because he’s just so damn good at wakeskating. He’s had a few really good video parts over the years, put this is probably my favorite of his so far.
  • Matt Hooker - He has the closing section, and if he keeps it up, he’ll be everyone’s Wakeskater of the Year come Fall. There’s one clip where he ollies out of a fountain and front boards a ledge that’s at least 8 feet past the ollie. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s bananas. There’s also the shot of him clearing a massive gap to back lip a piece of corrugated pipe. You’ve seriously got to see this stuff to understand how gnarly it is. Two thumbs up.

So yeah, long story short: go buy this movie. It’s available for just $10 as a high quality download and it’s seriously worth every penny. If you need some more persuading, check out a teaser here. And when you’re done watching it, just go ahead and click the “Buy Now” button. Trust me. Also, be sure to check out WeSubsist for more stuff from Tad and the boys.

Going National

Posted in News with tags , on March 18, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

(Press release shamelessly ripped off of the Slingshot Blog)

Slingshot, FIRST IN FLEX WORLDWIDE, is proud to announce we have signed Nick Joseph to our National Wake Team.

As an east coast rider from Wilmington, NC, Nick has spent the last several years shredding on the Cape Fear River, and producing videos for TelepromptedAnthems.com. Although he’ll show up at a few contests here and there, the majority of his time is devoted to freeriding, and shooting photos and videos. When not riding, he’s coaching students at TA Wake School, his Wilmington based wakeboard camp.

Nick has big plans for the 2011 season, and we’re stoked to have him on board. To see more of Nick, check out www.telepromptedanthems.com and www.tawakeschool.com.

Welcome to the family, Nick!

“Grizzly Adams DID have a beard…”

Posted in Random with tags , , on March 15, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Sitting in the hospital over the last week has provided me with a lot of spare time, which has allowed me to catch up on my movie watching, internet browsing and music listening. However, one thing that I haven’t done over the last week (and then some) is shave. So I got to thinking that maybe I should just let it go and see if I could pull off one of my lifetime goals, a legit beard.

Now, once upon a time, I used to think that I was completely incapable of growing a beard. I was certain that one side would be spotty or that it would look funny or that it would just take me forever to see results and I’d abandon the mission out of frustration. And my friends definitely didn’t with help my beard insecurities. Nick and Blake, my best friends from high school, can grow full beards in about 45 minutes and they look super legit. Clay Martin can sneeze a beard whenever he wants and I’m pretty sure that Tim Boyer was born with facial hair. It always seemed like such an uphill battle, but after the last few days, I’m starting to think I could do it.

So now I’m asking for your advice, dear reader. Would I look like a total bad ass or would it just be weird looking? Vote in this poll and let me know what I should do with my face. (And just for the record, this whole idea came about solely because I just realized you could create polls in WordPress and I wanted to try it out. Plus, I currently have some painkillers in me and they’re making this whole idea really amusing at this particular moment. So humor me.)

Big Ups To Brooklyn

Posted in Random with tags , , , on March 9, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Thanks to the Facebook page of my good buddy DJSK, I just realized that 14 years ago today, The Notorious BIG, hands down the greatest rapper in the history of the universe, died at the age of 27. And since I’ve got a ton of free time on my hands, I’m going to be watching old Biggie videos all day. Hell, I might even sign up for Netflix just so I can watch Notorious again (believe it or not, it’s not one of the movies they have on the pediatric floor at Duke).

I also just realized that even though I have several good friends who live in New York City, I still don’t have a Biggie Smalls t-shirt. What’s up with that, ladies?

Anyway, here’s a little TA video memorial to remember the man himself so check it out. These are all modern day classics, and let’s be honest: it’s not like you were really working anyway.

Temporarily Out of Commission

Posted in Random with tags , , on March 8, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, I know that things have been a bit slow around here lately. It’s partly due to the fact that it’s not quite warm enough to jump headfirst into wakeboard season, but it’s mostly because I haven’t exactly been running on all six cylinders lately. As we speak, I’m currently holed up at the Duke University Medical Center with an IV in my arm and a severe case of bedhead. I’ll probably be here for the next few days or so, taking care of some swollen lymph nodes and avoiding the hospital food like the damn bubonic plague (on a related note, I feel like Sweetarts Jelly Beans are like God’s personal gift to me – thanks Hawley!). I’ve already had a few guests drop in and hang out for a while, and rumor has it there might even be a HotSauce sighting sometime this week, so it’s basically a big party in room 5131.

(Photo credit goes to my Mom and her brand new cell phone. She’s becoming quite the gadget nerd these days.)

- – -

In actual wakeboarding news, I just had a few very positive phone calls from my hospital bed regarding a new project that I can’t quite talk about yet. Top secret stuff, but I’ll give you this hint: it’s gonna be cool.

- – -

And finally, Nick is gearing up to head down to the Sunshine State for his annual Spring Break pilgrimage. Rumor has it that he’s going to be hanging out with Adam Fields a bit, so hopefully those guys can get some work done. If you haven’t had the chance to check out the new AF Wake School website, quit slacking and click that link right up there. Top notch wakeboard coaching from Lake Gaston to Lake Brantley; what more could you ask for?

Tuesday Morning Jams – Young Brother

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 22, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Like a jackass, I’ve been sitting on this for a few weeks now and just now realized that I hadn’t posted anything about it. So here you go: some new jams for your Tuesday morning.

Young Brother is an indie rock band from Orlando. They just dropped their debut EP last month, and I’m here to tell you that it’s pretty awesome. You wakeboarders out there might recognize some of the guys in the band: pro rider Jeff McKee is the drummer, while Alliance’s Josh McWilliams and Chris Heavener (Chase Heavener’s brother) play guitar and bass. There’s also another guitarist named Alberto, and although I don’t think he has any wakeboarding connections, I’m sure he’s a swell guy.

If you’ve seen the new Obscura movie, Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens, you’ll recognize Young Brother from the movie’s opening sequence. If I had to compare the music to anything, I’d say it sounds kind of like Tame Impala or Annuals or maybe even the last Deerhunter record. It’s mostly very layered and soothing but there are some really big, epic moments as well. Solid jams all around; I’d say it’s good choice if you’re sitting on a porch/dock/boat drinking beer or if you have to drive somewhere with your mom in the car and don’t want her to hear your heavy metal or gangster rap.

The band pulled a Radiohead and put the entire 6-song EP on their Bandcamp page where you can pay what you want to download it. I’m particularly glad that it’s so good because the last time a bunch of wakeboarders got together to make music, the result was BoardBeats, and that was the biggest GD musical disaster I’ve ever seen. I mean seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

Anyway, go check it out. I give it the official TA Seal of Approval, which is almost as good as a Best New Music tag on Pitchfork or a spot on the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack.

Currently Playing on the Laptop

  1. Young Brother – EP (duh)
  2. Mogwai – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

Dre Day (and Everybody’s Celebratin’)

Posted in Random with tags , , , on February 18, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Like pretty much every post this time of year, this has absolutely nothing to do with wakeboarding, but it needs to be said. As most anybody with half a brain knows, when it comes to hip hop, the East Coast is superior in virtually every way (sorry, Stephanie). However, despite my allegiance to the right coast, I’m also quick to acknowledge our western counterpart and what they’ve brought to the table over the years. With that in mind, I’d like to wish a very happy birthday to a producer who can rap and control the maestro: Dr. Dre.

This guy has got it all figured out: he’s turning 46 years old and his day probably consists of nothing but making baller ass headphones and slingin’ Dr. Pepper, taking it easy while everyone else in the world is on the edge of their seats wondering if this is the year that Detox will actually come out. I also just realized that The Chronic came out nearly 20 years ago. Jesus, I feel old.

Anyway, happy birthday, Doc.

In other news, it’s 70 degrees in Wilmington today and Nick and Mark have been riding once a week for the past several weeks. It’s about that time people…

Happy Groundhog Day

Posted in News with tags , , , on February 2, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

I know it’s hard to believe, but there’s just not much wakeboarding going on around here lately. There are a few crazy kids out there, but for the most part, we’re just biding our time for Spring. Luckily for us, that rodent in Pennsylvania says that Spring is right around the corner. Usually, I wouldn’t take meteorological advice from an oversized rat, but I’m going to make an exception in this case because I really want it to to be true. Don’t let me down, Phil.

- – -

In more wake-related news, our good buddies at Slingshot recently announced two new additions to the family: they just signed Oli Derome and Keith Lyman to the global team. Oli’s been a top ten contender on the tour for a while now and Lyman’s reputation definitely speaks for itself. Big congrats to those guys and to Slingshot; hopefully Oli will get SS on some podiums this season and Keith will disprove some of those “you-can’t-go-as-big-on flex-boards” rumors that pop up from time to time. No matter what happens, I’m predicting massive sales of SS’s new Ballistic Series…and you know where you can get your hands on one

- – -

And finally, everybody wish a happy belated birthday to our very own Nick Joseph. There was a massive throwdown at Mark’s house on Saturday night, which I was unable to attend due to prior obligations. Judging from the voice mail I got from Matt Schrier (at 10:00 no less), it sounded like a large time was had. Happy birthday, buddy…

Going Global

It’s a big day here at TA HQ, folks. I’m looking at a brand new, freshly wrapped copy of No Name Losers ready to be mailed out. Now I know what you’re thinking: “But Brad, that’s not a big deal. You guys must have shipped thousands of copies * over the past year. Why is this one so special?”

Well, let me just point out the address on the envelope: Queensland, Australia.

That’s right folks: we’ve gone global. Our new buddy Jake Fowler has become our very first international customer and I for one couldn’t be more excited. The idea that dudes all the way around the world are going to be watching our little movie is beyond crazy to me. So good on ya, Jake; thanks a ton for the support. This bad boy should ship out tomorrow. Hope you guys are staying high and dry out there.

If anyone else wants to get their hands on a copy of the DVD (regardless of what country you live in), check out the store.

Anybody Want to Wakeboard?

Posted in Random on January 10, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

When you think about it, there are so many things that are awesome about the South: friendly people, barbecue, parties at hunting camps, Bojangles…the list could go on forever. Personally, this time of year, I’m always really grateful to live in the South because of the mild winters. I couldn’t stand to live up north because then you’d have to deal with snow and ice and lousy road conditions and heavy coats and…wait a second…oh yeah, that’s right! It’s colder than a witches titty outside and there’s five inches of snow on the ground! What the f__k is going on right now? This is the beach for God’s sake, we’re not supposed to have to deal with this! Jason just tried to order a pizza and apparently Domino’s isn’t even open. That’s when you know things are bad; shit has to really hit the fan for Domino’s to close shop.

That photo is the view from my pier back home at White Lake. I’m sure there’s some clever pun in there about White Lake and snow, but I’m not even going there. My Aunt Tee reported today that the lake was frozen and the roads were nearly impassable unless you have four wheel drive (luckily 95% of the White Lake population has four wheel drive). I guess it’s pretty and all, but I seriously can’t wait for Spring to get here.

In other news, I just got back from a TA Board Meeting at Nick’s house and big things are coming. Huge things. Things that will blow your mind. Just wait…

The Best of 2010: Wakeboarding

Posted in Random on January 3, 2011 by telepromptedanthems

Okay, so better late than never, right? Cut me some slack, I was really busy (i.e., drunk) over the holidays. At any rate, I’ve managed to pull together some of the highlights of 2010 from the wide world of wakeboarding, and I’ve arranged them all in one of my world famous lists.

2010 was a pretty good year and not to be too cheesy, but we definitely want to thank everyone who took the time to watch one of the videos or read one of the posts. And be sure to keep checking in over the next few months; we’ve got some pretty cool stuff up our sleeves for 2011 and I’m pretty excited about it all.

Anyway, check out the full 2010 roundup after the jump.

2010: The Mixtape

Posted in Random on December 8, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Not a lot to say about this one. I’ve taken 18 of the best jams from the last year and thrown them all into one .zip file, slapped some custom artwork on there and threw ‘em up on the internets for all to hear.

Due to my rampant OCD (thanks, Mom), I spent a long time working on several different tracklists before I settled on this one. It’ll barely fit on one disc and gives a pretty good sampling of the Best Music of 2010 (according to me). I’m already having second thoughts about a few of the selections on both the list and the mix, but I had to draw the line at some point and just be done with it. I will admit that there are a few songs on the mixtape that weren’t on any of the records from the list, but that’s just because it’s way easier to make a good song than to make a good album. Especially if you’re a rapper.

Chances are good that you might not like everything on here, but I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll like at least a few songs. Click here to get the jams. The full tracklist is after the jump…

The Best Music of 2010

Posted in Random on December 1, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

One of the coolest things about having a blog is the illusion that people give a shit about your opinions. Since there’s not much wakeboarding going on right now and because I love making lists more than pretty much anything else on Earth, I’ve taken the liberty of gathering what I feel has been the Best Stuff of 2010 and I’ll be posting them here throughout the rest of the year.

Up first is the Best Music of 2010. Fair warning: this is undoubtedly the longest post in the history of Teleprompted Anthems. There are some pictures, but it’s mostly words. Check it out and maybe you’ll find a few new bands that you’re into. Of course, you might find a bunch of bands that you can’t stand, but I can’t be held responsible for your lousy taste in music. Check out the full list after the jump…

In Good Company

Posted in Random on December 1, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

One of the coolest things about being back in Wilmington is being able to see all the rad stuff that people are doing down here. It’s pretty cool to have talented people around to keep you motivated and eager to put out new stuff. For example, Connor Buss is one of the new kids on the block, and he came by the house yesterday to show me a new video he had been working on. He had spent some time with the whole crew and managed to get quite a bit of footy that he turned into a short video called “Teleprompted Autumn” (See what he did there?). All the boys make an appearance: Nick, Mark, Clay, Sam, Matt Deal and Connor all have clips. It turned out really well, so you should all definitely go check it out and click the little heart button. And be sure to keep an eye on his Vimeo page because I’ve heard rumors of another new movie he’s been working on that he plans to drop soon. Thanks Connor; good stuff, man.

- – -

If still photography is more your thing, we’ve got you covered there as well. TA resident photographer Jason Hudson has begun to post some of his more recent work on his new blog at jkellerphotography.blogspot.com and as you’ve probably come to expect, all the photos are pretty great. He’s been experimenting a bunch lately with film and different cameras and it seems like he excitedly barges in my house at least once a week to show me the latest thing he’s been working on. It’s all very cool stuff, so swing by and check it out.

- – -

And finally, I’d like to point out that this is my third post of the day. Technically, it was my second, but WordPress went haywire about an hour ago and deleted the original post, so I had to redo it. So if you want to be picky about things, this is my fourth post. Which completely shatters all previous records and expectations of productivity around these parts. In other words, I’m going to bed.

Happy Trails, Brooke…

Posted in News on December 1, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

I woke up this morning to an email from our buddy and former debate opponent Brooke Geery. She was announcing that after six years at Alliance Wakeboard Magazine, she had decided to leave and focus on her snowboard site, Yobeat.com.

If you’re so inclined, she’s written an excellent farewell letter that is definitely worth a read. I don’t know what it is about the Alliance staff, but when they leave, they do it in grand fashion (I wish I could find a link to Tony Smith’s farewell letter from a few years ago).

Along with the rest of the crew at Alliance, Brooke has been a big help over the years getting our content on their website and in front of more people than we could have ever hoped for. So thanks for all the support, Brooke. I sincerely hope that snowboarding message boards have more of a sense of humor than their wakeboarding counterparts.

(PS: I blatantly stole that photo directly from Brooke’s letter on the Alliance website. Hope they don’t mind.)

Kind of a Big Deal

Posted in News on November 10, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

First things first: see that picture right there? That’s the current play count for No Name Losers and it says 10K. Which is an abbreviation for 10,000 views. Which is mother f__king crazy. Now, I realize that 10,000 is a relatively small number when you consider that some people film their cats playing with yarn and end up getting millions of views, but if someone told me a year ago that our little movie was going to be played over 10,000 times, I would have thought they were out of their mind. To quote our vice president Joe Biden: “This is a big f__kin’ deal.”

Thank you so much to everyone who’s taken the time to watch the movie and an extra large thank you to the people who went the extra mile and bought a copy. As our way of celebrating, we’re slashing prices on everything in our online store (and by everything, I mean the one DVD we have for sale). So go check it out and scoop up a copy of No Name Losers for just $10. Thanks again guys…we really appreciate it.

- – -

In much less exciting news, we’ve been somewhat out of commission for the past week or so thanks to some technical difficulties. After backing up a ton of files and suffering through a complete hard drive wipe and reinstall, I’ve gotten to the point where I can start working on stuff again. I’m getting ready to lock myself in my office to bang out a few projects, including a brand new Featured Rider segment. I can’t tell you who the rider is, but here’s a hint: his name rhymes with Dark Brugala. Good luck trying to crack that code.

- – -

And finally, in non-wakeboarding news, I went to Greenville on Saturday to hang with Tim Boyer and go see Future Islands play to their hometown crowd. And let me tell you people something: it was absolutely incredible. It was the best show I’ve seen on North Carolina soil in a long time. We met up with White Lake O.G. Tyler Bumgarner  and had a large time drinking too much and going bananas in the front row for the duration of the performance. Be sure to check those guys out if you’re into the more indie side of the rock and roll spectrum. Great stuff.

This Woman is Unstoppable

Posted in Random with tags , , on October 24, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

My Mom’s a total bad ass. When I got to White Lake yesterday, the water was perfect but there was no one around to ride with. I was pretty bummed until Mom stepped up and drove for my first real set behind the boat in about three months. I rode terrible and it was pretty depressing, but it wasn’t that big of a deal because Mom was the only other person who saw it and she kind of has to love me anyway. And not only did she drive the boat yesterday, but she pulled me again this afternoon for a 45 minute set. She wasn’t exactly up to speed on how to drive for wakeskating and she still has a few things to work on, but we had a little training session this afternoon and I think she’s going to pick everything up pretty quickly from here on. So thanks for driving, Mom. You better get ready for Thanksgiving…

- – -

Attention Wilmington: if you like going to see good bands, you should probably go the The Soapbox on Tuesday night because Old Canes are playing a show. Although their website describes them as Folk Rock/Americana/Indie, I’ll just describe them as “The band from Tim and Cary’s part in No Name Losers” They’re one of those bands that most people can get down to no matter what kind of music they’re into. At any rate, I’m getting pretty excited about the show. In the immortal words of Will I. Am: “I’ve got a feeling that tonight’s going to be a good night.” Well, not necessarily tonight…I was thinking more about Tuesday night, but you get what I’m saying, right? It’s going to be fun.

For those of you who don’t know him, our buddy Matt Schrier is the undisputed king of text messages, motivational speeches, and getting people stoked on whatever he’s stoked on at that particular moment. Matt’s been all over us for the past few months about how he’s reserving a space on the back window of his truck for a TA sticker and how much he wanted a TA t-shirt. Well, apparently he got sick of waiting. Dude went and made his own shirt and is rocking it as we speak (or type, or whatever). So you’re the man, Matt…thanks for all the support. I’m straight up beaming with pride right now.

This kind of coincides with all that talk about stuff in the pipeline and big moves on the horizon, but that’s another blog post for another day…

While I’m being all thankful, a big ol’ thank you goes out to the wonderful people of Dallas, Texas for hosting me last weekend. I had a large time with the Empire Wake crew and it was good to see the guys and gals from Texas Wake again. And oh yeah, I cruised around Dallas in an 18 wheeler cab. That’s right people, a big rig. It was was the most incredible thing I’ve ever done in my life. You can literally do whatever the hell you want when you’re in a big rig. It was a big milestone in my life. Good stuff.

Okay, so on Tuesday I went out on the river with Nick and Mark for a little sunset session. When I got to the boat ramp to meet up with them, I realized that I had my really cool, old school film camera in my car. It takes these awesome photos and there’s all kinds of light leaks and vignettes and it produces the most vibrant colors you’ve ever seen. Anyways, I thought it would be cool to snap off a few rolls of film that I happened to have. Check out the sweet shot I got of Mark doing a Method. You gotta love the vintage feel that digital photography simply can’t provide, am I right? *

* – This is all a lie. I took that photo with my cell phone and made it look like that with an app I downloaded off the internet. Looks cool though, doesn’t it?

- – -

Heads up Texas: I’m going to be all up in you this weekend. I’m flying out of ILM at 5:30 tomorrow and heading to the Lone Star state to call the shots for the Collegiate Wake Series’ stop in Dallas. I’m sure that good times will be had by all, so if you’re going to be in the area and happen to see this website for some reason, check out the contest. I’ll be the guy on the couch with a microphone. Come hang out and buy me a Lone Star or six. Several of you should probably expect late night voicemails/freestyles. You know who you are.

And finally, here’s the part of the post where I remind everyone about all the rad stuff we’re working on. Thinking outside the box. Widening our reach. Growing organically. Buying low, selling high. Big moves people. Just you wait.

In more wake-centric news, there’s tons of new jams coming from the Pacific Northwest. Our good buddies at Slingshot have just dropped their 2011 gear online, so go check it all out. They’ve got some wild new graphics, a few brand new shapes, and those mythical R.A.D. boots that Nick’s been rocking for the last few months. Hit up their wake site for more details and buy something while you’re there.

Meanwhile, down here in Wilmington, Nick just got his boat back from the shop. Over the past few days, we’ve had some of the nicest weather I’ve seen in a long time, so hopefully there’s a little bit more riding to be done before winter gets here. We’ve been talking about a few possible projects on the horizon and we’ve got some big stuff in store for the end of the year. Massive plans, people. Huge. Stay tuned.

A Lovely Weekend in Wilmington

Posted in Features, Wakeboarding with tags , , on October 6, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

If you know anything about me, you know that I love me some Wilmington, NC. It’s got everything you’d ever need: the ocean, good people, awesome food, and a female population that will make the rest of the world look pretty fugly by comparison. It’s also home to one of the strongest wakeboard scenes around, so when I moved back to Wilmington last Spring, all I could think about was how much I’d be able to ride. Clay’s boat is ready to go on the intracoastal and my boat is only an hour away at my beloved hometown of White Lake. Yeah, it was going to be awesome.

I think I can count on my hands how many times I’ve ridden this summer.

It seems like everyone has been riding less around here. Between jobs, classes, girlfriends, boat problems, injuries, or lousy conditions, life just gets in the way. I mean, with the exception of Sam Baker, none of us are exactly spring chickens anymore. It’s not like we can spend all day on the boat and just ride until we’ve had enough, and I feel like that painful fact was more evident this summer than it ever has been.

That being said, the boys recently decided to go all out and try to cram as much riding as they could into one weekend and film the whole thing. A little winching, a little wake riding, a little misdemeanor theft of a picnic table…it looked like a pretty fun time. The footage should probably be sent out to tourists and prospective UNCW students because this is how life in the Port City should be. And although weekends like this may begin to be fewer and further between, it’s good to know that they haven’t disappeared completely.

And since that last line sounded like a sappy PSA, I’m going to stop typing now. Just watch the video.

Getting Things Done

Posted in News with tags , on September 22, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

This is what I’ve been doing all night. Burning DVDs, assembling cases, printing labels, staying on that endless hustle.

The fine folks at Aussie Island Surf Shop recently let us know that they needed some more copies of our magnum opus, No Name Losers. Seems that people have been checking out the movie almost a year after it premiered, and we seriously couldn’t be prouder. Big thanks to anyone who’s snagged themselves a copy. For those of you who haven’t, well what are you waiting for?

In other news, Hey Lake Norman: Thanks for a lovely time last weekend. I had a big ol’ time at Wake the Lake 2010 and from the looks of things on the scaffolding, everyone else did too. Our buddies at Icy Waves have a whole mess of pictures posted on the ‘Book, so go check them out and click the like button a time or two.

Finally, Nick just delivered some fresh footage to my house and I’m getting ready to dig into it pretty soon. From the clips I’ve already seen and the stories I’ve heard, I’d say it’s a safe bet that you guys are going to be pumped. New stuff in the pipeline, people…keep your eyes and ears open.

Top Five Things About Surf Expo 2010

Posted in News with tags , , on September 15, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Surf Expo is a magical gathering of the most important players in the wakeboard industry, so needless to say, TA was well represented in Orlando last weekend. It was a long journey that didn’t even last that long: we left Wilmington at 1:00 AM Friday morning, got to Orlando at 10, went straight to the show, then went to the parties and fell asleep at 3:00 Saturday morning. After a quick excursion to OWC on Saturday morning, we were back on I-95 by 1:00 and home in Wilmington by 10:00 Saturday night. Since I’m a huge fan of lists, here’s a quick rundown of the sleep-deprived awesomeness that went down.

5. Seeing all the new stuff – I’m not going to lie; it’s pretty cool seeing all the new graphics, technology, and gimmicks that the companies are going to be pushing for the next year. Plus, you can get online and tell everyone how in the know you are. Because when it comes down to it, wakeboarding is all about knowing more insider info than the next guy. Slingshot’s got some rad stuff in store for 2011, but you probably already knew we’d say that.

4. Wake Awards – I’d never been to Wake Awards before, so I was kind of pumped to see them. It was kind of like the VMA’s, but instead of Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga, they had Amber Wing and Harley Clifford. I’ve got to give it up to the crew at Alliance for taking Video of the Year with The Parks Documentary and I was also really pumped to see Greg Nelson win the Legend award. It’s been like 13 years since “Spray” came out and the dude’s still a total bad ass.

3. Video Premieres - Alliance premiered “Washed Up Before We Were Has Beens,” the new movie from Obscura in their booth on Friday afternoon and it was as awesome as you’d expect. All those guys are ripping and the video had a really cool Sfumato-esque feel to it. High fives go out to Danny Hampson and Aaron Reed for putting it all together. Later that night, Geoffrey and I got Nick to drop us off at the House of Beer to check out the premiere of  Rob Absher’s  new movie “Not Just Clockwise.” I’ve got to be honest, that premiere is a bit fuzzier, but we’ll get to that later. I do remember standing on top of a booth, looking over at Geoffrey and saying “This is the spot where I’m going to pass out later.” In other words: two thumbs up.

2. Free Stuff – I mean seriously, who doesn’t love getting free stuff? I came away with like five t-shirts, a hat, a whole shitload of coozies, and enough magazines to keep my bathroom stocked for three months. And that was just one day; Geoffrey and I were contemplating going back Saturday with the sole purpose being getting more free stuff but he wanted to go ride at OWC and I was too hung over, which brings us to our number one greatest ting about Surf Expo:

1. Free Drinks - A long time ago, some marketing genius figured out that people are more likely to spend their money if they were in a good mood. He then realized that people were more likely to be in a good mood if they had been drinking. Do the math and you’ve got a bunch of exhibitors handing out free booze at trade shows. Fast forward to 12:00 Friday afternoon in Orlando where Robby McFarland, Geoffrey, and myself were approached by a good looking, scantily clad Polynesian woman asking us if we wanted a rum and coke. Well of course we did, and the mood for the rest of my day was set. Nick and Geoffrey took off for OWC later that afternoon, but not me. I was on a mission to find which booths had free booze (thanks Oakley!) and then made my way to Wake Awards, were I was greeted with two free beers. Then I ran into my good buddy Molly who happened to have a stash of Red Bull and rum in her bookbag. Is that even a legit combo? Later, the boys picked me up and then me and Geoffrey embarked on a mission to completely dominate the House of Beers at Rob’s premiere, where we proceeded to call virtually every mutual friend we have, you know, just to say hi at 1:00 AM. All in all, the trip was a success.

PS: The photo is from the Obscura premiere at Alliance’s booth and I stole it directly from their website. I hope they don’t mind; I chose that particular photo because it features me and Geoffrey looking like some industry insiders. So thanks for the validation, Alliance!

Heading to Orlando

Posted in News with tags , , , on September 8, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

At roughly 1:30 AM Friday morning, Nick and I will be leaving our beloved Port City to head down to to the Sunshine State for Surf Expo. For those of you who have never been, here’s a preview of the weekend we’re about to have:

Fists will be bumped, orders will be placed, parties will be thrown, drinks will be drunk, coozies will be collected (then most likely lost), stickers will be stuck, more fists will be bumped, deals will be made, MGMT will be played, hearts will be broken, and good times will be had by all. I’ll probably walk about ten collective miles over the course of the weekend and if we play our cards right, there might actually be some wakeboarding somewhere along the line.

We should be getting to town just in time for the show to start on Friday, so if you’re going to be down there, give us a shout and let’s meet up and bro down.

Featured Rider – Geoffrey Barnes

Posted in Uncategorized on August 31, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Let me tell you a story about Geoffrey Barnes.

When Nick and I were making No Name Losers, Geoffrey was always willing to do whatever he could to help. He would drive the boats, drive the jet skis, and always film whenever he was called upon. Truth be told, he was behind the camera for several of the best shots in the whole movie. But since he wasn’t technically an Aussie Island team rider, he was relegated to a few quick clips in the Friends section.

So when the movie was finally done and DVDs were officially available, Nick and I sat back and patiently waited for all the orders to come rolling in. And we waited. And we waited some more. Until finally, the next day, I got an email saying “Hey, someone just  bought your movie.” I was really happy to find out that someone liked the movie enough to actually buy a copy, so I anxiously opened the email to see where I was going to send the inaugural copy of No Name Losers.

Then I saw the customer’s name. Geoffrey f—ing Barnes.

The guy worked his ass off helping us make the movie and he still plopped down $17 (which is still a bargain) to have his very own copy. Needless to say, I immediately refunded his money and sent him a text saying he was a retard and to expect a package later that week.

That’s the kind of person Geoffrey is; just a good dude who’s super low key and always nice to everyone. Plus, since he’s been in Greenville at East Coast Wake Park, he’s become an insane rail rider. He pretty much blows my mind every time I see him ride out there, and Nick and I have wanted to do a feature on him for a while. As rail riding keeps gaining popularity, you’re practically guaranteed to see more of Geoffrey in the future. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy a few sets with the elder Barnes brother and the guy who bought the very first copy of No Name Losers.

  • Staying at Tim Boyer’s house tomorrow night.
  • Haven’t been on a board in almost a month.
  • Haven’t hit a rail since the early 2000′s.

What could possibly go wrong?

Texts From Jason Hudson

Posted in Random with tags , on August 12, 2010 by telepromptedanthems

Just got this text from photographer extraordinaire Jason Hudson:

“Just tried to text “Give me a call sometime” to a chick and my phone corrected it last minute to say “Give me anal sometime.”

This has nothing to do with anything, other than the fact that I thought it was awesome. Not much wakeboarding activity going on around here. Got a few things coming up, but it’s been kind of boring lately.

I’m starting to think that this place could use a makeover.

Current Listening:

  2. The Love Language – “Libraries”
  3. Jesu – “Conquerer”
